Urgent Appeal against Bush Administration’s Attack on Iraq

March 20, 2003 　The US military attack on Iraq, launched today, have neither logical reason nor cause, as the fact that the US failed to gain support from international community proved. (1) As for Iraqi WMD problem, most countries appealed for peaceful solution by continuing inspection. However, the US threat of military attack forced inspectors to exit Iraq and break the chance to solve the WMD problem by legal diplomatic means. (2) Because Iraq has nothing to do with September 11th event and Al-Quaeda, “thread of terror” cannot be the reason for America to exercise the right of self-defense. (3) President Bush unilaterally demanded Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and his aide to go into exile and put “ousting Hussein regime” and “democratize of Iraq” as a purpose of military attack. However, Iraq is independent state of member of the United Nations. Iraqi political system should be decided by Iraqi people. American intervention to Iraqi politics violates international law. (4) America has most advanced WMD in the world. If the US forces will use Deplated Uranium, many innocent people in Iraq will be harmed. The recent UN report calculate the US attack will cause 500,000 casualties and 900,000 refugees. Such a big sacrifice only for American interest cannot be justified. (5) The US attacks without any legitimation approval by UNSC, destroy international code and give a lot of trouble to international community in the future. And the US made an example of justified first-strike, thus it cause difficulty for keeping world order. Furthermore, Japanese President Junichiro Koizumi declared his support for such an unjustified war. However, he failed to convince the Japanese people. We want ask: was this action taken with clear diplomatic strategy that Japan throw off UN-centered foreign policy and it will continue to follow the US policy even if Middle East and European countries opposed? There is no preparation and concrete strategy in the remarks and attitude government leaders these days. Japanese government follows the US policy only in an impromptu manner. It will adversely affect to Japanese credibility, esteem as well as national interest. In addition, experience of the nuclear arms in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is the cause of Japanese opinion of no-war. Because of these reason, we, undersigned, severely condemn American attack on Iraq and position taken by Japanese Government. and we demand for stopping attack immediately.
